Juvenile Delinquency in the 19th and 20th Centuries: East-West Comparisons

(Centre for British Studies, Mohrenstr. 60, from Mar 12, 2011 09:00 AM to Mar 13, 2011 02:00 PM)

Sponsored by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, The Centre for British Studies (Großbritannien-Zentrum) will host a two-day conference on the history of juvenile delinquency in the 19th and 20th Centuries. In particular, discussion will focus on comparisons between the construction and understanding of juvenile delinquency in the cultural fields of East and West. Bringing together scholars working in a variety of fields including history, sociology, ethnography and literary studies, we hope to reach a more nuanced understanding of the ways in which concepts of childhood, youth and delinquency have been shaped by particular cultural contexts.

Anglo-German Scholarly Networks in the Long Nineteenth Century

(Centre for British Studies, Mohrenstr. 60, Berlin, from Aug 19, 2011 09:00 AM to Aug 20, 2011 06:00 PM)

On 19th and 20th August 2011, the Centre for British Studies is hosting a conference on Anglo-German Scholarly Networks in the Long Nineteenth Century. The organsiers are PD Dr Ulrike Kirchberger (Bamberg) and Dr Heather Ellis (Humboldt University, Berlin) By building on new analytical categories, this conference hopes to achieve an integrated, transnational perspective on Anglo-German scholarly relations in the long nineteenth century. Based on the idea of the transnational network in both its informal and institutional dimensions, we aim to discuss the transfer of knowledge and ideas which took place, for example, through the medium of scholarly correspondence and the migration of scholars between the two countries. In addition, we will look at paradigm shifts in science, the formation of academic disciplines and increasing professionalization as well as mutual perceptions and stereotypes in the context of Anglo-German scholarly interaction. We aim to bring together scholars working on a variety of aspects of Anglo-German scholarly networks in the long nineteenth century.
