Anna Schoon joined the Centre for British Studies in October 2015 as a PhD student at the Graduate School.

Her main research interests include constructions of Self and Other in contemporary British fiction, cosmopolitanism, the literary field, world literature and narratology.

In her PhD project, Anna analyses the European Union Prize for Literature and novels from the UK, Ireland and Germany which have been awarded this prize between 2009 and 2014. She examines the roles and functions attributed to ‘European literature’ in the context of European cultural policy and how the winning novels relate to these attributions. Against the background of controversial notions of ‘European culture’ and ‘European identity’, her research aims at critically engaging with negotiations of Europeanization and its increasingly complex identification processes in literary texts paratextually marked as ‘European’, as well as questions concerning tensions between culture and politics in the context of the EU and its cultural policy programmes.

Before joining the Centre, Anna graduated from Mannheim University with a BA in Culture and Economics and from Saarland University with an MA in British Literary and Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature. During her degrees, Anna studied abroad in Kristiansand, Norway, and Portsmouth, UK.

Since September 2017, Anna has held the Elsa-Neumann-Stipendium des Landes Berlin.

She is a member of the German Association for the Study of British Cultures and the Berlin-Britain Research Network.
