Jürgen Schlaeger is Senior Professor of British Literature and Culture. He studied History, Philosophy, English and Russian at the universities of Würzburg and Cologne and as a Michael Wills Scholar English at Oxford. He has an M.A. from Oxford and a Dr. phil. from Konstanz. He did his ‘Habilitation’ at Konstanz (1975) and was professor of English and Comparative Literature there from 1976 – 1995. He chaired the research group (DFG Forschergruppe) ‘The Constitution and Function of Fictional Texts’ (1986-1994) and the Collaborative Research Centre ‘Historical Anthropology’ (SFB 511) until 1996. His main research interests were ‘Literary Theory’, ‘Life-writing 16th–21st Centuries‘, ‘Representations of Emotions’, ‘The Literary Mind’ and ‘The Cognitive Structures of Literary Texts’. At present he has a research grant to finish a book on the history of life-writing and the concept of the individual. Professor Schlaeger co-edited the Journal for the Study of British Cultures and The Review of English and American Literature (REAL), a journal, in which he edited the thematic volumes on The Anthropological Turn in Literary Studies, Representations of Emotions, Metamorphosis, Structures of Cultural Transformations and The Literary Mind. He also taught at the UC Irvine and the Fudan University in Shanghai and was several times Visiting Fellow of Corpus Christi College Oxford. He was founding director of the Centre for British for British Studies; dean and pro-vice-chancellor at Konstanz; chairman of the German Association of University Teachers of English, board member of The European Society for the Study of English, and chair of the Shakespeare Prize ‘Kuratorium’ of the Alfred Toepfer Stiftung in Hamburg of which he is now chair of the board. In 2009 he was made an Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Professor Schlaeger successfully supervised four PhDs and one “Habilitation”. |
