Dr. Roland Pietsch


 

Dr. Roland Pietsch has over twenty years of experience directing, coordinating, and teaching international student programs, primarily at New York University Berlin and Queen Mary University of London. He holds a Magister Artium in history and economics from TU Berlin, and a PhD in history from Queen Mary University of London, which was supported by a fellowship from the National Maritime Museum, Royal Museums Greenwich.


Dr. Pietsch has published extensively on the history of youth and sailors. He is the author of The Real Jim Hawkins (2010), which uses Robert Louis Stevenson’s juvenile hero from Treasure Island as a starting point to explore the history of seafaring boys in the British navy. His most recent publication is a chapter on youth in war and conflict in A Cultural History of Youth in the Age of Enlightenment (Bloomsbury, 2023). He has also worked as a historian for popular television documentaries, such as the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? series.
