Melanie Neumann

PhD Candidate

Melanie has studied Cultural Studies, with a major in English and a minor in Social Science, at the Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg and the University of Wales, Bangor. She then did her Master in British Studies at the Centre for British Studies and is now part of the Berlin Graduate School of British Studies. In general her research interests include: Anglo-Irish relations; Irish nationalism; the Northern Irish Troubles and migration.

Melanie will be looking into British and Irish migration to Berlin during the past 10 years. She will examine how this migration differs from other migration flows to the city and if the Irish and British in Berlin can be classified as lifestyle migrants. The influence of these communities on Berlin as a city, its economy and especially its creative scene are her primary interests. Furthermore, she will be looking at the perception of Germany and Berlin in Britain and Ireland in order to be able to understand the recent increase in British and Irish newcomers to the German capital.
